From Debbie’s desk:
Wow! A new year! It’s hard to believe that it is already 2010. Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were worrying about Y2K and the new millennium? While good things have happened in the last ten years, like the election of America’s first black president, Barak Obama and the Boston Red Sox finally breaking the curse of Babe Ruth and winning the World Series – twice!, there have also been tough times. Let’s take a minute to look back on some of them:
The last 10 years have been marked by a string of colossal events: the televised tragedy of 9/11 and the terrorist attacks on America; the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a catastrophe so vast it nearly wiped out an entire American city; two ongoing wars; a global financial collapse; a cataclysmic tsunami; torture; Bernie Madoff, to name a few. The last ten years have challenged our “rose colored glasses”; they are not quite as rosy as they used to be. We now know that every day is not “a wonderful life” and
love does not always “make the world go round.” We understand that
we can’t always “put on a happy face” and the economy cannot be
fixed by “pennies from heaven.” Our boat has been rocked; our bubble
has burst; the glass seems to always be half empty.
It almost takes one’s breath away as we think about these poignant events and the vivid pictures that we saw plastered on TV and in newspapers. We watched and waited; we wondered and worried. Yet even as we think about the details, do we really understand?
Thankfully, in the midst of these dramatic and sometimes horrific events, there is a Rock that cannot been shaken, a Light that shall not be extinguished, a Promise that will not be broken. His name is Jesus. The book of Hebrews reminds us: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (13:8) As Christians, we are tethered to the Rock, we are illumined by the Light; we are protected by the Promise of Christ’s eternal Love. Jesus knows what we have faced in the past, what we are facing in the present, and what we will face in the future. Our Savior, Jesus Christ understands. That is what matters! That realization will see us through the highs and lows of today and all of our tomorrows!
Remember, through Jesus Christ, we are blessed – forever!
